The theme of our August issue is long-term conditions. There will be coverage of nurses working in the fields of obesity, MS, diabetes and myasthenia gravis, as well as an examination of self-management for those with long-term conditions.

The issue will also have extensive coverage of the district health board nurses’ strike in July and prospects for resolving the issue

July 2018

The July issue has the theme of perioperative/surgical nursing.
It also includes our annual index.
As well as a profile of a nurse practitioner working in plastic and reconstructive surgery, there will be articles looking at the issue of surgical smoke plume and how to improve patient discharge times from a post anaesthetic care unit.
Our continuing professional development feature will examine wound healing.
A news focus will examine how hospitals will prepare for strike action if this goes ahead in July.

June 2018

The focus this month is on Pacific nursing and Pacific health. Included are profiles of Pacific nurses, many of them male, working in innovative practice in different parts of the country; a research article looks at the barriers to Pacific nurses taking on leadership roles; and the budget is analysed.

April 2018

The April issue will focus on the International Nurses Day  theme – Nurses: A voice to lead – health is a human right.

A sub-theme will examine midwifery and the current crisis in services around the country.

The editorial will be written by a spokesperson from the Human Rights Commission, while articles will look at informed consent with vaccination, advanced care planning, and the evolution of the supervision, direction and delegation role in New Zealand.

March 2018

The March issue focuses on primary health care. There will be profiles of nurses working in a variety of primary health care roles, including school and sexual health nursing. The impact of registered nurse prescribing in community health will be examined, while our professional development article, CPD4Nurses, will look at best practice for managing strokes. Look out for our activities page which includes a nursing crossword and the column “It’s Cool to Kōrero”.

February 2018

Kai Tiaki Nursing New Zealand’s February issue has a focus on students, with articles by and for students. It includes a research article, coverage of the Global Nurses Union conference in Canada in December, and interviews with health leaders.

Our end-of-year issue – the combined December/January issue – usually offers a potpourri of delights.

This year they include an article looking at the vital role nurses play in preventing antimicrobial resistance; profiles of two New Zealand nurses helping restore services in Bougainville, a country still recovering from civil war in the 1990s; a story about a family that boasts eight nurses; cervical screening for women with physical disabilities – what are the barriers and how can they be overcome?; a viewpoint on why it’s taking so long for nurses to achieve staff staffing in district health boards; and new resources from the NZNO library.

November 2017

Aged care is the theme for our November issue.

Practice articles include one on oral hygiene care for older adults living in hospital-level care; a student nurse experiences a crisis on a rural health placement; the responses to staff and clients at having a café as part of an aged-care facility; and a nurse describes being part of a worldwide study DIAN – the Dominantly-Inherited Alzheimer Network. A nurse practitioner in older adults Bridget Richards describes her Waikato-based practice and CPD for Nurses examines the biology of ageing.

July 2017

“The theme for our July issue is neurological nursing. Our coverage will include the work of an epilepsy and stroke nurse, neuro-degenerative disorders and palliative care, the care of a mobile patient with multiple sclerosis, and the joys of neurological nursing.We will also have coverage of the International Council of Nurses’ congress held recently in Barcelona, Spain.

Our continuing professional development article will examine the physiological impacts of stress.

A news focus article will look at nurse leadership in district health boards and where the real power might lie.”

June 2017

Respiratory nursing is our theme this month. The issue will include a number of profiles of respiratory nurses working in a variety of practice areas, from paediatric services to services for the elderly. An education article will look at the new asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease fundamentals course.

The issue will contain an in-depth profile of equal pay campaigner Kristine Bartlett and her journey to victory. Viewpoint articles will examine the impact of bullying and the experience of one nurse returning to practice after an eight-year break.

An Education Supplement will also be part of this issue.
